A great classroom party game can build community, provide entertainment, and become a wonderful classroom tradition. This is especially true in a time when we are moving away from classroom parties full of food.
Check out these pro tips to make the most of your classroom party game experience.
Keep It Simple
There is no need to make your classroom party game an elaborate endeavor. In fact, some of the simplest games like Simon Says and BINGO can be the most fun when you pair them with a theme.
By keeping it simple, you increase the enjoyment levels for everyone involved, including you!
Use a Classroom Party Game You Already Know
While I think it is a good idea to review the expectations for any game before playing, no one wants to spend half their classroom party learning how to play a new game.
By using a game most everyone already knows, you get have more play time and less time learning the rules.
For example, I used this Editable Digital Stinky Feet Template to create a custom classroom party game for my class that included silly trivia, as well as facts about me, and my students loved it! We already played Stinky Feet several times, so students knew what to expect and were ready to dive right in!
Get Creative With Prizes
So many of us, as teachers, have that prize box that is filled with stuff that is frankly junk. Instead of dolling out the plastic pieces, try some free, less-tangible prizes that students can use.
Check out this post for some ideas.
Don’t Be Afraid to Use Content
There is nothing wrong with using a little content when it comes time to play a classroom party game. In fact, it is encouraged!
If you do decide to use some content, make sure it is a topic students are already familiar with and will not lead to frustration. You want everyone to be on an even playing field here.
Think multiplication BINGO or a game of Four Corners about directionality.
Silly Trivia
Silly trivia questions are a great way to keep students laughing, even when they don’t know the answers. Again, I use the Editable Digital Stinky Feet Template and insert my own questions about silly facts.
Students are amazed by the facts and so proud of themselves when they know it!
One fun suggestion for this idea is to have each student write their own silly trivia question to include in the game. They are so excited to see it come up and love to try and stump their classmates.
Get Moving!
Movement is important, especially on party days when the excitement level is high. Harness this energy and get students moving while playing your game!
Keep Expectations High
No matter how many times you have played a classroom party game, it is important to review expectations before getting started to make sure everyone is on the same page and ready for fun!
Practice Good Sportsmanship
Every game we play in the classroom affords the opportunity to practice good sportsmanship and model what it is like to be a gracious winner or loser. This important life skill is built right in and will help our students to development their emotional intelligence all while having fun.
Be Mindful of Needed Materials
I love a good Minute to Win It game, but honestly they are heavy on materials and I am not always ready to spend the time to prepare for them.
Knowing this about myself, I try and plan classroom party games that are low on materials or use items I already have on hand.
You do you though! If a materials heavy game floats your boat, more power to you.
Also keep in mind the amount of cleanup needed after a game. Nothing ruins party fun like a laborious cleanup process afterwards.
Have Fun!
Most of all, remember to have fun! Classroom parties are about enjoying one another’s company and building community. Capitalize on this by enjoying yourself and showing students how to enjoy themselves as well.
The Best Classroom Party Game Experience
The best classroom party game experiences are when you are able to keep expectations high, have fun, and enjoy one another. With this in mind, you are ready to plan your best classroom party yet!
